AETA Dinner - 28th November 2007

The Australia-East Timor Association has a dinner every year that commemorates East Timor’s proclamation of the Independent Republic of East Timor on 28th November 1975.

This year some Timorese students celebrating the end of their degrees or participating in a leadership program at Victorian University attended and sang. Among them were Vidal, Ego Dulci, Ismenio, (not in photo) and Alex.

I managed to snap the musicians and two very old friends of East Timor Jean McLean and John Sinnott. More to come about them next year.

John Sinnot & Jean McLean

AETA ‘timor ponies’ Jean McLean and David Scott who are residents of my suburb of St Kilda played host to Josef Vondra who was the speaker for the evening. Josef wrote his first book about Portuguese East Timor in 1969 and in 1999 published another title of which perhaps somebody will tell us by post. Josef’s partner - artist Sue Sutton came with him. Sue worked for the art school in Dili called Arte Moris. There is more about that that will be coming up in sms . Titled ‘The Art of Healing’ it is an up-beat take on the art of some young timorese as they come to grips with their violent past.
