Since then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/people\/\">people <\/a>involved have changed and a Commission of leaders has been formed in Suai. The Timorese community turned up to cook and showed their traditional culture through their food, paintings, weavings, food, pottery, dance and music. For more of their stories through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/culture\/art\/\">art.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>______________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2934\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/jean-lighting-candlewebcrop.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[265]\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2934\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2934\" title=\"jean-lighting-candlewebcrop\" src=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/jean-lighting-candlewebcrop-150x143.jpg\" alt=\"Jean McLean Lighting Candle (Place &amp; time unknown)\" width=\"150\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jean McLean Lighting Candle (Place &amp; time unknown)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The<\/strong><strong> East Timor leadership<\/strong> requested assistance from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.portphillip.vic.gov.au\/discover.htm\">Port Phillip Council<\/a>, where residents had a strong <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/history\/\">history<\/a> of solidarity with the people of East Timor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Port Phillip has eleven residents who worked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/history\/timor-ponies-in-pt-phillip\/\">in solidarity <\/a>with East Timor for over 24 years, (at the time of the referendum in 1999) and others who had been involved since the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/history\/history-of-friendship\/1991-santa-cruz-massacre\/\">Santa Cruz Massacre in 1991<\/a>.<\/strong> One of these,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/history\/timor-ponies-in-pt-phillip\/jean-mclean\/\"> Jean McLean seen pictured here, <\/a>was active in the Labour Party advocating for Timor&#8217;s Independence for many years. Jean was very active in getting the Friends of Suai off the ground in the first year or two. In 2010 Abel was sworn in as the new <strong>Ambassador to Australia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abel  introduced Suai as the\u00a0 town for Port Phillip<\/strong> to befriend.<strong> Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/place\/\">more about Suai here<\/a>.<\/strong> As the largest centre near the Timor Sea, it is likely to <strong>be most affected if the oil and gas industry choose Timor for processing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>__________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/truck-closer.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[265]\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-316\" title=\"Truck for Suai\" src=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/truck-closer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>Council&#8217;s next request for community involvement came in the form of a &#8216;Truckloads for East Timor&#8217; campaign.  <strong>The  community were invited to bring bicycles, garden tools, anything really<\/strong> on the assumption that everyone in Suai had lost everything. In July 2000\u00a0 200 bicycles, second hand clothes, sewing machines, musical instruments and gardening implements together with the truck pictured left. They landed in Dili and\u00a0 were later delivered to Suai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since 2009 the Port Phillip residents <\/strong>have donated funds for a wide variety of projects from jackfruit plantations and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/friends-of-suai-port-phillip\/2009\/08\/01\/permaculture-project-for-suai\/\">permaculture garden<\/a>s to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suaimediaspace.org\/youth\/\">youth media group<\/a> with broadband access\u00a0 and a library for the local school.
